What is Periodontology?

Periodontology is the dental specialization that focuses on diagnosing, treating and preventing diseases affecting the periodontium—the hard and soft tissues that support and stabilize the teeth.

This includes the gums, alveolar bone, periodontal ligament and root cement. All these elements work together to keep the teeth fixed and stable in the jaws during chewing.

Periodontists treat gum disease and help maintain healthy gums, which is important for your overall health.

Periodontics deals with the diagnosis, medical treatment and prevention of periodontal diseases, namely gingivitis and pyorrhea. During your appointment, the specialist examines your gums, checks if a gingival recession is occurring, and the periodontal spaces (the spaces between the tooth and the gum) with a probe.

Types of Gum Diseases

  1. Gingivitis: Gingivitis is a mild and easily treatable form of gum disease. It’s characterized by inflammation of the gum margins. Common signs include redness, swelling and bleeding, especially during brushing. Gingivitis can be chronic (due to buildup of plaque), or acute, (usually as a result of specific infections or trauma). If left untreated, gingivitis can lead to periodontitis.
  2. Periodontitis: Periodontitis is a more severe form of gum disease that affects the alveolar bone and periodontal ligament. It usually progresses from untreated gingivitis and may lead to bone loss and loosening of the teeth. Periodontitis often develops without pain, making early detection crucial.

Contributing Factors:

  • Poor oral hygiene
  • Excessive buildup of tartar
  • Smoking
  • Diabetes
  • Vitamin C deficiency
  • Genetic predisposition*

*Recent research also suggests that hereditary may play a role, particularly in aggressive forms of the disease.

Symptoms of Periodontal Diseases

  • Bleeding during brushing or flossing
  • Redness or inflammation of the gums
  • Persistent bad breath (halitosis)
  • Deep pockets forming between teeth and gums
  • Loosening of the teeth
  • Pain while chewing
  • Plaque and / or pus on the gums

Treatment and Therapy Options

Initial Stage Gingivitis: For early-stage gingivitis, treatment generally involves thorough plaque removal and improved daily oral hygiene practices.

Advanced Treatments: For more advanced periodontal diseases, our treatments may include:

  • Non-Surgical Therapies: These involve scaling and root planing to remove plaque and tartar and control bacterial growth.
  • Surgical Therapies: Procedures to restore lost tissue and improve gum health, including:
    • Reduction of Periodontal Pockets: Tartar is removed, and gums are repositioned to adhere closely to the teeth.
    • Bone Grafting: Replacement of lost bone using fragments of your own bone, synthetic materials, or bone donation to support new bone growth.
    • Soft Tissue Grafts: Reinforcement of gums using grafted tissue from the mouth to cover exposed roots.
    • Guided Tissue Regeneration: Stimulation of gum and bone tissue growth by placing a barrier to promote tissue regeneration.
    • Bone Surgery: Reshaping of bone around the teeth to eliminate bacteria and prevent further bone loss.
